Cryostasis is an incredible game. Indeed the term ‘game’ barely does it justice – experience would be closer, but even that isn’t quite right. It’s a title you’ll want to talk about down the pub; although like a book that you want others to read, you’ll stop yourself giving away too much. I’ve completed the game and I want to blurt out the truly wonderful ending. I won’t though, I’ll keep it locked away in my head, eating away at my existence until I go mad...

In essence, Cryostasis is a survival horror game – a genre most recently championed by the creepy, but decidedly entertaining Dead Space. There are certain parallels to be drawn between the two – health is shown in a more discreet way (in this case your body temperature), and they both boast a limited supply of monsters to off, focusing instead on scaring your lower intestine out of your nether regions.

Cryostasis is more psychological in its thrills though, and will appeal more to anyone that played Penumbra or Call of the Cthulu. Part of this is thanks to your character’s ‘Mental Echo’ ability, which enables you to change the actions of the dead, which in turn can change the current time frame. Whether that’s opening doors or removing obstructions it’s a neat trick that lends a decent puzzle element to proceedings.

Melty Man Cometh

You assume the role of one Alexander Nesterov, a meteorologist who has been sent to investigate the North Wind, a Russian nuclear icebreaker that has come into difficulties. You arrive in a storm, and so it’s impossible to tell just what state the ship is in, but it soon becomes apparent that something awful has and is still happening. The ice-breaker makes for a stunning setting, and its something that Action Forms has exploited beautifully – with depressing surroundings and creepy stories to tell.

A core component to the game is keeping your body warm enough to avoid freezing to death. This adds pressures to events – whether you’re in the belly of the ship, or struggling to make it between compartments on the upper decks. There are plenty of things to warm your hands against – makeshift fires, light bulbs and hot pipes to name but a few – though making it to the next warm spot isn’t always easy.

Lathe to love

The other drains on your body-heat, aside from the weather, are the assaults from the denizens of the North Wind. Transformed by events, these zombie-like creatures start off making you jump, but soon advance to blowing ruddy great chunks out of you. This is the game’s weakest point though, as it isn’t as competent a shooter as it thinks. The weapons might take an age to operate, but that just adds to the tension; the issue is that as the game progresses harder and harder waves of monsters are thrown at you. Ammo management becomes more important, and that’s not what you’re playing the game for.

That said, it’s the level of immersion combined with a sumptuous plot that will see you through these short falls. The sound in particular stands out – I think we have the winner of the best game sound for 2009 already. Turn off the lights, slap on some headphones, and have a large pile of clean underwear to hand as you make your way through the ship: Everything from the creaking of its huge steel hull to the drip-drip of melting ice is realised beautifully.

Cryostasis is a beautiful, yet flawed, gem of a game. It offers up a thoroughly unique experience, that at its height is as breathtaking as it terrifying. The decision to render this as a first person shooter is slightly double-edged though, because as a shooter it’s less of a stunner, but is still a worthy addition to your game shelf.

A sumptuous addition to the Horror/Survival genre, boasting a quality story and atmosphere to die for. It’s no shooter though.

Horrible story? - Really? Stunned that anyone would think so...

Horrible game play? - Erm... please define horrible as far as game play. It's straightforward enough, not to obscure what you need to do, there's enough variation for it not to be boring.

Decent Graphics? - Hmm... did you actually read the review or play the game?

Bad Optimization - spot on, shouldn't run as slow as it does, but then it doesn't make use of multiple cores, so a faster single-core processor is the way to go for this one.

played it as long as i could..then i just HAD to uninstall it...it was SO boring.

Go on metacritic you'll see that maybe you overrated this game.

Yes the story is horrible...well the be correct narration is horrible, story looked avarage.

I was bored as hell by the gameplay....it was so flat.

Yes decent graphics...graphics...i'm not just speaking of # of polys and effects. The game has great fx and some decent models. But once you have seen the first then minutes you've seen everything...very bad design...again...boring!

Bad optimization: using one core for highend games IS bad optimization....i have a QX6800 (overclocked), an ATI HD4870 (overclocked) and 3GB of DDR2 800...i can run crysis all maxed out with better fps...so yes this game was bad coded.

And sorry for my english if it wasn't good enough :)

I don't think giving a game

I don't think giving a game a higher score than someone else means I over rated it - that's not quite how it works. Plenty of people missed the point of this game (it's not a standard FPS shooter, and that's how many have reviewed it). I'm not saying it's perfect, but then that would have meant giving it 90%+.

Shame you stopped playing, there are some really neat twists and turns near the end (and one very odd point where the game gets turned on its head, but anyways...)

Optimization: I agree it's bad, I was just trying to explain why it was bad.

Your English is fine - I'm not going to have a go at you for that.

Bugged

This game has the feel of a game more suited for console then pc.
The "monsters" seem to appear and disapear at will, especially in the first part of the game.
The health system seems flawed also. I've gone into rooms with full health, see a scene from the past that results in a fight and find I'm nearly dead before the fight even starts.
Graphics seem nice but nothing special.
As for the mental echo thing, I was expecting something quite different than trying to change the course of history for crew members. Thought the mental echo thing would give you clues to weapons or maps or something of value to solve the mystery.
Plot? what plot, all I see is graphic and physx overload.
Games of yesteryear were better for lack of graphics and more concentration on gameplay and atmosphere.
Today is all about how nice a game looks, which is a shame

The Game is ok nothing

The Game is ok nothing special. Average Graphics not sure what the hype is about. I enjoyed Bioshock more.
Enemy AI is bad and the way enemy rolls around lol it's too scripted, i run it on a 4870x2 all high full AA 1680x1050 and it runs with 50-60 fps using FRAPS with physx on so performance for me is good.

Physx works with users of ATI cards. The effects are offloaded to the CPU.

this is one of the best

this is one of the best survival horror fps-adventure games i played.The atmosphere of the game is amazing and kept me glued on my screen. The graphics at high settings with physics enable are great. The only downside is the bad optimization and the begining of the game is a bit boring

An Acquired Taste

Let's face it, this is nothing like your typical twitchy, fast-paced shooters. If this is what you're expecting, turn away now. But if you enjoy story and narrative, and are willing to make each shot count (and I mean every shot), you will be glued to your seat as you piece together the fate of the North Wind and its crew. This demonstrates the ability of video games to act as the most immersive medium to convey a story, far superior to either print or film media. But if all you want to do is kill some zombies, mash on a guitar, or pwn online, this is not the game for you (check Left 4 Dead, Rock Band, or Team Fortress 2 for suitable examples of the former).

I liked the game at the

I liked the game at the start, but soon it gets boring and VERY repeatitive. Every time it gets the same: kill some zombies, turn on some lights, unlock a door and kill zome more zombies. And the slow walking is just friggin annoying.

best game played in a wee while!

Just finished the game and I am knocked out by the experience and the feeling I have after the ending. It is better than any film I've seen by far and the developers have to be congratulated!
This is a totally different experience and made me run back to my keyboard after quitting the game in frustration on many occasions.
You all know this scenario, fellow gamers. Far Cry 2 just doesn't do it...
The game feels very European and is all the better for it.
Needs a good PhysX-capable GPU: I have a 3.4GHx Pentium D and a GTX260 and it ran well (mostly). Install the PhysX patch at yr peril!

There are multiple elements to the game - none of which are played to a satisfying conclusion.

I just don't know what the story was. The inital forest trek parchment story just faded to nothing. The rosy ending also made little sense given you only saved a tiny fraction of the crew, and that the vessel also used slaves. Not to mention you arrive to a ship which isn't trapped (it's not wedged)

I also got bored in the beginning and you are right, theres few thigs to kill, and most of game it's about running... but I kept playing

also I also thought that mental echo was too repetitive, BUT near the end and just in there you understand that most mental echo, and then you have to thought of everyone you have saved, and you will link everything at the end. I think that was the most exciting thing of this game, it gives you a lot of story segments and near the end the game let you know how they are ALL related

**SPOILER*** i understood in the near the end that most mental echoes were relationed, and most of the are the same incident ( i.e a explotion) but from different crew point of view. **** SPOILER END ****
