Issue 268 game demo roundup!
Batman Arkham City
Coming late to the diner table is the Batman Arkham City demo, a mere five months post the official release date. If this your first opportunity to have a bash on this triple A title then the good news is its also dropped significantly in price from launch to under £15, if you shop around outside Steam.

Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter
Following the trend, this is another demo release after the fact. This time in epic fail fashion and upping the ante to two years after the retail release. Like the original Serious Sam circa 2001, Second Encounter carries over both the continuing story and unforgettable intense FPS action. Run and shoot, and shoot and run! Serious Sam isn’t very sophisticated or clever but does a stellar job at keeping your attention by throwing hordes of crazed monsters in your direction. This demo is packed with sample action, both single player and multiplayer levels are here to give you a full flavour of the Serious Sam universe.

All Zombies Must Die!
£6.99 these days gets you a packet of highly taxed UK cigarettes, or you can save your lungs and shoot some zombies by spending the coin on this slick indie title instead. While the constant onslaught of zombie dodging and smacking can be quite taxing on your hands, the game translates pretty well from it’s console twin-stick origins to standard mouse and keyboard controls.

The Dream Machine
This point-and-click adventure demo sets things off on small desert island, and through trial and error you set about finding a way to catch and cook a simple fish. Once achieved you realise it’s a dream and wake up in bed, where the demo ends shortly after this. It’s little more than 5 minutes long and you haven’t really learnt anything about the premise of the game other than a tiny sample. It’s still a window into the game play experience you can expect, but you’ll need to read up elsewhere to find out more.

Naval War: Arctic Circle
There’s a been a mixed reception for this rough- around-the-edges near future naval war game. In ‘this’ reality, NATO and Russia are no longer chums and your part is controlling one side of the battle and all the seafaring task force units that come with it. It’s a little clunky making hard to really love unless it’s the type of game that really floats your boat. Yes indeed, pun fully intended!

Gratuitous Tank Battles
Gratuitous Tank Battles finally gives us a opportunity to try out the other side of the battle and attack the tower defence defenders. In fact it works both directions in the game, where some mission maps put you on defence, some on offence, and others giving you the option to choose. Each successful mission grants a selectable upgrade, and don’t miss the section off the main menu for customising the load out of your attacking armoured units.
